Texts:  Exodus/Exodo 20:1-4, 7-9, 12-20, Matthew/Mateo 21:33-46

In the name of God:  Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.  Amen.

Amen.

Today’s first and last readings are more related than they may seem; both speak of our relationship to God.  In Exodus, Moses gives Israel the 10 Commandments, the foundation of what we call “the Law.”  Now we think of the “law” as a set of rules that function kind of like an electric fence that keeps us confined to certain behaviors – and if you try to escape you will be “zapped” by punishment from God.  So, laws feel like constraints to us.

Yet, God’s intention was not to constrain but to reward.  Did you know that the word that we translate as “commandments” is “mitzvot” in Hebrew – and that “mitzvot” means “blessings”? It’s the plural of the word “mitzva” which New Yorkers know means a blessing – doing a “mitzva” for someone, like carrying someone’s groceries, is something you don’t have to do but you want to do, to give someone an unexpected gift, a blessing.  That’s what the 10 Commandments are – the “10 Mitzvot.”  They are meant to bless; they are the gift God gave to his beloved children to help them honor him, live in his love, and in turn bring God’s love to others.

What’s fascinating is the reaction of Israel – instead of accepting God’s gift of loving intimacy, while the mountain is still quaking, as God’s voice is still sounding like a trumpet, the people implore Moses to get between them and God to protect them:  “You speak to us, and we will listen; but do not let God speak to us, or we will die.”  In this moment of sacred blessing, they instead choose to keep God at a distance, unwilling to give up their own often sinful desires in order to be close to him, as the Mitvot asked them to do.  They are trying to hide from God’s direct gaze, knowing – planning, really – to fall short of God’s hopes.  In this they are not alone in the Bible.

Adam and Eve tried to hide in the Garden of Eden, even sewed fig leaves together to cover themselves.  Cain tried to deny killing his brother Abel, and later on, Jonah tried to run from God’s presence.  None of this worked. And it doesn’t work for the Israelites either.

When we try to hide from God, we get ourselves into worse trouble, and sin even more grievously.  Here’s something you might not realize – today’s reading where God himself announces the 10 Commandments takes place several weeks before Moses climbs Mt. Sinai to get the tablets on which these commandments are written.  Would Moses have had to climb Sinai at all if Israel had not rebuffed God’s offer to speak to them directly?  No.  And what did Israel do while Moses was off on that unnecessary errand?  They held an orgy around the Golden Calf where they broke every single one of the 10 Commandments, rejecting the gift that God had offered them so recently.

But despite their attempt to reject him, God never rejected his people in return, and tried once again to overcome our fear of him by sending his son Jesus to live among us.  Yet, we still rejected God. Sadly, our innate tendency to sin is made worse by our desire to keep God at a distance.  Even when there are warning lights flashing red all around us, we always hope to get away with behavior that we know is wrong, because we still are afraid that if God speaks to us, we will die.

The gospel reading shows this graphically.  A landowner (who symbolizes God) tries again and again to send slaves (who symbolize the Hebrew prophets) who repeatedly try to warn and save Israel; but they are all disregarded or killed.  Finally, God the landowner sends Jesus his son hoping for a different result, but he is murdered too.  The gospel goes on to say that because the tenants rejected and finally killed their chances to be part of the legacy of the vineyard (which symbolizes God’s kingdom), they have now earned permanent disinheritance and the death penalty.

Now, I’m going to say something that you may disagree with, but then I’ll try to explain it.  We are just like the tenants in the gospel.  How?  There is nothing going on in our world today that should surprise us – I didn’t say “shock us,” because shock is a reaction to the speed with which surprises arrive.  The “surprises” of a pandemic, social unrest, increasing storms and fires, and our democracy under threat should not be surprises because the warning lights have been flashing red for decades if not longer.  God has sent us warnings, but we chose to push them away.

Doctors have warned us of a pandemic for many years, yet our current administration defunded the agency that was helping us prepare.  Social unrest has been boiling under the surface of our country since its founding, yet we turned away.  Scientists have warned us about the dire consequences of global warming since the 1940’s, yet we preferred our cars and our oil profits.  And the current threats to our democracy date back at least to the nasty politics of the 1990’s, possibly earlier, but we tolerated the cynicism with which our government has been viewed ever since, thinking it could never truly destroy us.

God has been trying to warn us in many ways: through the voices of authorities, and of course especially through the words of Jesus who has consistently tried to call us to justice, imploring us to not just respect but to love our enemies, and to forgive each other without limit or precondition.  But our response has still been,  “Do not speak to us, or we will die.”  Just as those before us have, we sought to put distance between us and God in the vain hope that we can somehow hide from God’s gaze and keep behaving in ways that we know are destructive without reaping the results.

Church, this is the time repent of our unwillingness to listen to God – after all, the world is offering us real reasons to be afraid while we should have no fear of God; listening and to heeding God’s voice can only help.  Jesus is still speaking, if we are willing to hear  My prayer for is:  “Please God, speak to us, that we may live.”
